Please note this course must not be studied using small screened mobile technology. You must use a device with a screen size which is a minimum of screen size of 10 inches or more is strongly recommended, although a screen size of 7 inches is an absolute minimum requirement.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, since November 2006, include the duty that employers shall provide appropriate training for all workers who are likely to be exposed to asbestos and to those who supervise or oversee works that might expose employees to asbestos. This includes the self-employed who must ensure they have up to date training.

Preparing for your Awareness Training

The training takes a minimum of 2 hours however we encourage you to take your time and allow approximately 3 hours.

You will benefit from letting those around you know you’re taking the lesson and will be required to concentrate for your test.


This Category A Asbestos Awareness Course does not allow you to work with asbestos, it is only designed to make you understand the dangers of asbestos. If, at any time, you identify what you believe to be asbestos you must immediately halt your work and contact your employer.

Should you need to work with asbestos, you will be required to take additional training, as per the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Course Content

The course is made of an introduction and four modules which each contains one lesson.

Module 1 – Types, properties health effects of asbestos
Module 2 – Uses of Asbestos and likely locations of ACMs in buildings and plant
Module 3 – How to avoid exposure to asbestos, including Emergency Procedures
Module 4 – Asbestos legislation


The aim of this Online UKATA Asbestos Awareness course is to provide an awareness and development of knowledge to site based employees of the hazards and risks posed by asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) within their everyday working environment and an overview of the legislative measures in place to safeguard themselves and others affected by work activities.

On successful completion of this course, delegates should be able to:
• Have an increased awareness of the nature and properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke;
• Be familiar with the types, uses and likely occurrences of asbestos in buildings and where appropriate items of plant;
• Know how to avoid the risks from asbestos by understanding;
• Where to obtain information on asbestos in premises prior to commencing work;
• What to do if suspicious materials are found;
• How to use appropriate workplace precautions, including the risk assessment process, or seek advice on workplace precautions, in respect of the risks of asbestos;
• Undertake work activities in a safe manner and without risk to themselves or others.
• Have an awareness of the key aspects of the asbestos regulations and how they fit into the broader context of health and safety legislation.
• Procedures to be followed when coming into unintentional contact with ACMs and an understanding of the appropriate emergency arrangements.


This training course is designed to provide delegates with an understanding of asbestos only. It will not provide information on how to carry out any work with asbestos. This is a UKATA approved Asbestos Awareness course and is aimed at workers who are likely to be exposed to asbestos but not intentionally work with asbestos.


This course is recommended for all workers who are likely to disturb asbestos containing materials during their normal work should be trained so that they can work safely. This Asbestos Awareness (Category A) course is suitable for anyone who may be exposed to asbestos as part of their work so that they understand the dangers and can avoid any work which may disturb asbestos. This includes, but is not limited to, professions such as:

Heating and ventilation engineers
Demolition workers
Carpenters, joiners and construction workers
Roofing contractors
Painters, decorators and plasterers
Fire and burglar alarm installers
Shop fitters
Gas fitters
Computer installers and telecommunications engineers
General maintenance staff
Cable layers and electricians


Candidates who successfully pass the course will receive UKATA Asbestos Awareness E-Learning Certificate
